Album Spotlight: Six by Seven

The Way I Feel Today

Looking for a completely rich and organic alternative sound? Then search no more, because you'll find it in Six by Seven's album The Way I Feel Today. This energetic group of UK rockers recorded the '02 album live -- with no overdubs -- resulting in a powerfully raw, in-your-face presence.

The Way I Feel Today includes the fan favorite Play Button I O U Love , a song that has seen success while circulating England's more pop-oriented outlets. And while it is one catchy tune, it differs greatly from the other harsher, more rugged sounding tracks on the album.

For example, the title track, Play Button The Way I Feel Today , shows lead singer Chris Olley emulating the seductive voice of alternative icon Billy Corgan. And Play Button Anyway similarly follows in the Smashing Pumpkins' footsteps, with its layers of love song sentiment meeting hard rock instrumentation.

Further numbers in the eleven-song line-up push a little further down the alternative path, still playing love song-like melodies, but tossing in some aggressive, more hardcore beats. In addition to the voluminous vocals and repetitively bursting beats, these tracks have an added hint of space rock, with tier after tier of warbling and distant droning.

Perhaps that spacey sound is not just coincidence either, considering the guys came up with the name Six By Seven after learning the results of research associated with the Hubble Telescope: the universe is expanding at a rate of six by seven.
